Nero Rome Jupiter Ancient Roman Denarius Coin 022774
ANCIENT ROMAN DENARIUS COIN. Silver, 2.76 grams, 17.13 mm. Obverse: NERO CAESAR AVGVSTVS, laureate head right. Reverse: IVPPITER CVSTOS, Jupiter seated left, bare to waist, holding thunderbolt and sceptre. RIC 53; RSC 119; Sear (1988) 673. Nero (13th October AD 54 – 9th June AD 68). Famous as the emperor who “fiddled while Rome burned”. The first five years of his reign were considered the “Golden Time” of Imperial Rome. However, he displayed greater passion for the arts and chariot racing than for governing the Empire. These traits soon made him extremely unpopular with the army and the Senate. Emotionally and psychologically unstable, with a flare for the dramatic, and possessing nearly unlimited resources, Nero became a truly shocking figure at points during his reign. In the end, several rebellions and mutinies brought about his death by suicide. GB 795 7410 88; Margin scheme applies. Export licences may be required for some items.
