Genuine graded and encapsulated by NGC as Choice About Uncirculated, Strike 5/5 and Surface 3/5, with a notation of “edge marks”. Struck about 1,600 years ago in Sirmium, showing the emperor resting his foot upon a bound captive. This design is considered to be ironic because actually Honorius got beat up by everyone, not the other way around. We bought this raw and made a short video of it before it was stuck in the plastic case, about 6 years ago, which appears here. Emperor in the West, Honorius, was on the job when Rome got sackedAlaric and the Visigoths got tons and tons of gold out of this guy to not sack Rome. Then they sacked Rome anyways. I know, I know, maybe he betrayed Alaric and provoked him. The lesson here should be that paying someone to not sack you is a bad investment. Honorius (Latin: Flavius Honorius Augustus; 9 September 384 15 August 423) was Western Roman Emperor from 393 to 423. He was the youngerson of emperor Theodosius I and his first wife Aelia Flaccilla, and brother ofArcadius, who was the Eastern Emperor from 395 until his death in 408. Duringhis reign, Rome was sacked for the first time in almost 800 years. Even by the standards of the rapidly declining WesternEmpire, Honorius’s reign was precarious and chaotic. His reign was supported byhis principal general, Stilicho, who was successively Honorius’s guardian(during his childhood) and his father-in-law (after the emperor became anadult). Stilicho’s generalship helped preserve some level of stability, butwith his execution in 408, the Western Roman Empire moved closer to collapse.
