The coins in the photos are the coins you will receive. These coins represent the first rulers in the Severan dynasty, and are extremely sought after coins. Both coins are high relief portrait denarius. The Julia Domna coin is in especially spectacular condition. The bust is done in very high relief, allowing you to see the actual face of this Empress. Julia Domna was(and is) considered to be one of the most beautiful, as well as the most powerful women in ancient Rome. The portrait on this rare coin bears that out. BONUS: Winner will receive an additional silver coin from the Severan Dynasty. Septimius Severus, also known as Severus, was Roman emperor from 193 to 211. Severus was born in Leptis Magna in the Roman province of Africa. As a young man he advanced through the cursus honorumthe customary succession of officesunder the reigns of Marcus Aurelius and Commodus. Severus seized power after the death of Emperor Pertinax in 193. Pertinax had become emperor after having Commodus killed. Commodus insanity and brutality had become to much for those around him. After consolidating his rule over the western provinces, Severus waged another brief, more successful war in the east against the Parthian Empire, sacking their capital Ctesiphon in 197 and expanding the eastern frontier to the Tigris. He then enlarged and fortified the Limes Arabicus in Arabia Petraea. In 202 he campaigned in Africa and Mauretania against the Hostile tribes along the southern desert frontier of the empire. Severus fell fatally ill in late 210. He proclaimed as Augusti (co-emperors) his elder son Caracalla in 198 and his younger son Geta in 209. Severus died in early 211 at Eboracum (today York, England), and was succeeded by his sons, thus founding the Severan dynasty. It was the last dynasty of the Roman empire before the Crisis of the Third Century. Julia Domna was born in Syria in 160ad. She was the second wife of Septimus Severus(193-211), sister of Empress Julia Maesa, and the mother of two future co-emperorsfor a brief time… Julia was very influential and powerful in Rome. She gathered intellectuals and philosophers around her and was widely regarded as an exotic beauty and a shrewd politico. She was empress with Severus from 193-211ad. She exercised great power with her son Caracalla throughout his reign(211-217). She ruled while her son was away on Campaign, and was even granted the title of “Mother of the Senate and of the fatherland”. Things weren’t all sunshine and roses for Julia though. Her two sons, Geta and Caracalla reigned together from 209-211. Caracalla ordered his brother killed in 212. The murder took place in Julia’s presence. She helplessly watched as her son was assassinated by her other son. She still adored Caracalla though, and upon receiving news of his death at the hands of the usurper Macrinus, she starved herself to death. Julia Domna managed to maintain her power for many years. She used her intellect and wiles to stay near the top for nearly a quarter century. At her death Julia was 57, old for someone in power in Rome at this time. This Julia Domna silver denarius shows her beauty and helps me to imagine her in ancient Rome. This is history in your hands. The item “Lot Of 2 Ancient Roman Silver Coins.
