LUCIUS VERUS 161-169 AD AE Ancient Roman Coin, NICE TRUE AUCTION
This is an Ancient Roman AE coin, a large (36 to 37 mm) bronze. It was struck during the reign of Lucius Verus, who was Emperor from 161 to 169 AD. The obverse shows his bearded bust facing to the right with legend. The reverse shows a chariot with man standing holding whip or club, with a team of 4 horses. Below is “COS II” and SC (which stands for Senate Consulto) meaning the coin was issued with the blessing and authority of the Senate. The is a nice decent to high grade example, that is also nicely centered with full legends. Verus is a little scarcer Emperor, and all high grade coins of his are. The flan or planchette of the coin, meaning the bronze itself, has some tiny cracks visible a little on the hair of Verus on the obverse, and on the man standing in the chariot on the reverse. This is typical of ancient coins which were “struck” to make the design on the coin, rather than modern mintage processes and attests that the coin is authentic and not a contemporary item. Answers and/or more photos. The coin weighs somewhere between 18 and 20 grams, and is a rare find with this reverse!
