Ancient Roman Coin Tetradrachma Of Galba(68-69AD)silver/billonrareVF +bonus
Eirene is the Greek goddess of peace and wealth. Eirene is equivalent to Pax. The coin in the image is the coin you will receive. Galba ruled for only 7 months in 68-69AD during what is known as The year of the four emperors which also includes Otho, Vitellius, and Vespasian. Galba was an old man when he was crowned Emperor and was ineffective as a ruler. He served for such a brief time that his coins are incredibly rare, and this excellent coin is no exception. Coins of this quality of Galba are some of the rarest and most valuable of Roman imperial coinage. This large, heavy, and thick billon coin is silver in appearance and is really a great coin. Thanks and good luck. Galba was born in 3BC and served as Roman emperor for seven months (AD 6869). His administration was forgettable and his advisers allegedly were corrupt. Galba was the son of the consul Gaius Sulpicius Galba and Mummia Achaica. In addition to great wealth and an ancient lineage, Galba also had the ear of the emperors Augustus and Tiberius. He began his senatorial career at a younger age than most and became consul in 33AD. He was appointed commander of the Upper German army (4042), and served a proconsulship in Africa. Galba was appojnted to other political positions until In 68, believing that the emperor Nero was planning his assassination, Galba fled to Gaul and helped encourage a rebellion along with the Roman governor of Gaul. In June Of 68, Nero committed suicide. Along with Otho, the governor of Lusitania, Galba marched on Rome and was proclaimed emperor by the Senate. Galbas attempt to cut back Neros extravagant spending was unpopular, as was his execution of troops recruited by Nero as well as those of several opponents, including Lucius Clodius Macer, whose revolt against Nero from Africa had cut off Romes grain supply. Galbas refusal to pay the praetorians the promised donative led to the assassination of his ally Nymphidius. Galba rewarded the parts of Gaul that had supported Vindex and thus outraged the legions of Upper Germany, which had defeated Vindex. 1, 69, the legions of Upper Germany refused the customary vote of allegiance to Galba and soon joined with the legions of Lower Germany in proclaiming Vitellius emperor. To win senatorial support, Galba chose as his heir a scion of a noble Roman family, Lucius Calpurnius Piso Frugi Licinianus, instead of Otho, who had been his loyal ally. Otho won over the praetorians with the promise of a large bribe and they murdered Galba in the Roman Forum on January 15. The historian Tacitus famously wrote of Galba, It was everyones opinion that he was capable of ruling the empire, had he never ruled (Histories, Book I, part 49). Eirene, or Irene (pronounced I-ree-nee; Greek for peace; the Roman equivalent was Pax), was the personification of peace and wealth, and of the season of spring (late spring was the usual war campaign season in Greece, when peace was most at risk). She was depicted as a beautiful young woman carrying a cornucopia, scepter and a torch or rhyton. Eirene was one of three Horai, goddesses of the seasons and the keepers of the gates of heaven. Her sisters were Eunomia (Order or Good-Pasture) and Dike (Justice).
